Abstract

This number 42 of the Documental Series – Research Reports, entitled “Philosophy in
Enem 1998-2018: a-20 year panorama of the presence of Philosophy in the exam in light of
the official guidelines for the area”, synthesizes the main findings gathered in a post-doctoral
research, under the supervision of professor Dr. Wivian Weller, with the Research Group
Gerações e Juventudes (GERAJU) and the line of research Educational Comparative Studies
(ECOE), in the School of Education at the University of Brasilia (FE/UnB). This research project
aimed to update and broaden the results of a previous study undertaken by the author in
2012 as part of a partnership between the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI)
and the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP). This
study was later published in 2015 by INEP under the title “Philosophy in Enem: an analytical
study of the Philosophy-related content through Enem’s editions between 1998 and 2011.
Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the coverage of Philosophy items in the test
through these twenty editions, this study points to challenges and possibilities that the test
presents to the implementation of curricular guidelines. This work gains particular relevance
now, as it marks ten years since Philosophy became mandatory for the Brazilian secondary
school curriculum (2008-2018) and twenty years since the implementation of Enem (1998-
2018), as well as the recent publication of the National Curriculum Common Core (BNCC) in
December 2018 and the reform of the structure of the Brazilian secondary school system.
